File Manager is cPanel’s built-in way to work with your website’s files right in your browser, no FTP program needed. You can upload, create, edit, and organize everything that makes up your site. Here are the tasks you will use most.
Getting There
Log in to cPanel and open File Manager in the Files section. Your website’s public files live in the public_html folder.
Upload Files
- Open the folder you want to upload into, usually public_html or a subfolder.
- Click Upload in the toolbar, then choose your files. They transfer straight to that folder.
Create a New Folder or File
- Navigate to where you want it.
- Click + Folder or + File in the toolbar, give it a name, and create it.
Edit a File
- Click the file once to select it, then click Edit in the toolbar.
- Make your changes in the editor and click Save Changes.
Editing .htaccess
Your .htaccess file is often hidden. Turn on Show Hidden Files in File Manager’s Settings to see it, then edit it like any other file. Because .htaccess controls how your site behaves, make a backup copy before you change it.
Golden rule: before editing or deleting anything important, right-click and download a copy first. There is no undo button in File Manager, so your own backup is the safety net.
