How to Stop Other Sites From Hotlinking Your Images

Category: Security & SSL  •  Est. reading time: 2 minutes

Hotlinking is when another website displays your images by linking directly to the files on your server. Their page shows your picture, but your server pays the bandwidth bill every time it loads. cPanel’s Hotlink Protection puts a stop to it.

The Steps

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Hotlink Protection in the Security section.
  2. Confirm the list of URLs allowed to display your files. Your own domain should be there, with and without www.
  3. Optionally list the file types to protect, such as jpg, jpeg, gif, and png.
  4. Click Enable.

Double-check your own domain is on the allow list before you enable this, including any subdomains you use. Otherwise you can accidentally block your own images from showing.
