PHP is the programming language most websites, WordPress included, run on. New versions are faster and more secure, but occasionally an older plugin needs an older version. cPanel lets you control which version your site uses, whether for your whole account, one domain, or even a single folder.
Set the PHP Version for Your Account
- Log in to cPanel and open MultiPHP Manager in the Software section.
- Check the box next to the domain you want to change.
- Pick a version from the PHP Version dropdown and click Apply.
Set a Different Version for One Domain
MultiPHP Manager lists each of your domains separately, so you can give one domain a different PHP version from the rest. Select just that domain, choose its version, and apply.
Set the Version for a Single Folder
For finer control, a folder can run its own PHP version using a small rule in that folder’s .htaccess file. This is advanced, and the exact rule depends on your server, so if you need it, it is worth having us set it up.
Reset to the Default
To put a domain back on the account default, return to MultiPHP Manager, select it, and choose inherit or the default version, then apply.
Our advice: run the newest PHP version your site supports. If something breaks after an upgrade, an outdated plugin or theme is almost always the cause, and updating it is the real fix, not staying on old PHP forever.
