How to Use the top Command in Linux

The top command shows what your server is doing right now: the running processes and how much CPU and RAM each one is using, updated live. Press q to quit at any time.

Standard usage

top

View processes for one user

top -u root

Show the full command path

With top open, press c (lowercase) to switch between the short program name and the full command line that started each process.

Change how often it refreshes

With top open, press d (or s) and enter the number of seconds you want between screen updates.
