Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, adds a second lock to your cPanel login. Even if someone gets your password, they still cannot get in without the rotating code from your phone. We strongly recommend turning it on. This guide covers setting it up, and, if you ever have to, turning it off.
Turn 2FA On (Do This)
- Log in to cPanel and, in the Security section, open Two-Factor Authentication.
- Click Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.
- Open an authenticator app on your phone (such as Google Authenticator or Authy) and scan the QR code cPanel shows you.
- Enter the six-digit code from the app to confirm, then save.
From now on, logging in asks for your password and a fresh code from the app.
Save Your Setup Key
When cPanel shows the QR code, it also shows a secret key in text. Save that key somewhere safe, a password manager is ideal, or keep an image of the QR code. If you switch phones or lose the one with your authenticator, that key lets you set 2FA up again on the new device. Without it, you would have to contact us or your host to reset 2FA before you could get back in.
If You Ever Need to Turn It Off
- Go back to Two-Factor Authentication in the Security section.
- Click Remove Two-Factor Authentication and confirm.
Only disable it for a good reason, such as switching to a new phone. If you do turn it off to move devices, set it back up right away. An account without 2FA is a much easier target.
