ModSecurity is a web application firewall that sits in front of your site and blocks common attacks before they reach it. It is a good thing to have on. Occasionally, though, it can be overly cautious and block something legitimate, like a plugin action, and you may need to toggle it while troubleshooting.
The Steps
- Log in to cPanel and open ModSecurity in the Security section. (If you do not see it, your host may manage it for you.)
- You will see a list of your domains and whether ModSecurity is on for each.
- Use the toggle to turn it On or Off for a specific domain.
Leave it on by default. ModSecurity blocks real attacks every day. If it is interfering with something, the better fix is usually a specific rule exception rather than turning the whole firewall off. Disable it only briefly while testing, then switch it back on.
