How to Rename a Database in cPanel

Category: Databases  •  Est. reading time: 1 minute

Sometimes a database ends up with a confusing name, or you want it to match a new site. cPanel lets you rename one without rebuilding it, though there is an important catch to know first.

The Steps

  1. Log in to cPanel and open MySQL Databases.
  2. Under Current Databases, find the database you want to rename.
  3. Click Rename next to it.
  4. Enter the new name and confirm.

Important: if a live website is connected to this database, renaming it will break that connection until you update the site’s configuration with the new name. For WordPress, that means editing the database name in your wp-config.php file. If you are not sure, back up first, or let us handle it so your site does not go down.
