How to Connect to Your FTP Account with FileZilla

YCategory: FTP & File Transfer  •  Est. reading time: 2minutes

Once FileZilla is installed, you connect it to your server so you can start moving files. You will need three things from your host: a hostname, an FTP username, and its password.

The Quick Way

1. Open FileZilla. Along the top you will see Host, Username, Password, and Port fields, called the Quickconnect bar.

2. Enter your Host (often your domain, or something like ftp.yourdomain.com), your Username, and your Password.

3. Click Quickconnect. Your server’s files appear in the right-hand panel.

The Better Way: Save It in Site Manager

If you connect often, save the details so you do not retype them. Go to File, then Site Manager, click New Site, and fill in your host, username, and password.

Use a secure connection when you can. Plain FTP sends your password across the internet unscrambled. If your host supports it, choose SFTP or set the encryption to require FTP over TLS in Site Manager. It is the same effort with far better security.
