FileZilla is a free program that lets you move files between your computer and your website’s server. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and installing it takes about two minutes.
Step 1: Download the Client
Go to the official site, filezilla-project.org, and download the FileZilla Client, not the Server version. The site detects your computer and offers the right version for it.
On Windows
Open the downloaded installer and follow the prompts. Watch the screens closely and decline any bundled extra software you are offered along the way. You only need FileZilla itself. Finish up and launch it.
On Mac
Open the downloaded file, then drag the FileZilla icon into your Applications folder. The first time you open it, if macOS warns that it was downloaded from the internet, Control-click the FileZilla icon, choose Open, and confirm. After that it opens normally.
On Linux
The simplest route is your distribution’s package manager, which FileZilla itself recommends. On Ubuntu or Debian, run sudo apt install filezilla. On Fedora, run sudo dnf install filezilla. You can also download the Linux build from the page above.
One safety note: only ever download FileZilla from its official website. Copies from other sites sometimes come bundled with unwanted extras. Sticking to the source keeps you clean.
