Here is something most people do not realize when they register a domain: the contact details you provide, your name, address, email, and phone, can end up in a public directory that anyone can look up. Domain privacy fixes that. It is one of the first things you should turn on after buying a domain.
Why This Matters
Domain registration records have traditionally been public. Leave your details exposed and you invite spam calls, junk mail, and the occasional scam email pretending your domain is about to expire. Privacy protection swaps your personal information for the registrar’s proxy details, so the public sees a stand-in instead of you.
How to Turn It On
- Log in to wherever your domain is registered.
- Open the settings for that domain.
- Look for Domain Privacy or Privacy Protection and enable it.
Many registrars now include privacy free, so it may already be available at no extra cost.
Do this early. The sooner privacy is on, the less your details circulate. If your domain is already public, turning privacy on now still helps going forward.
